I recently started working for a company that has a 30 day waiting period before the employee receives the STD payments (60% of avg salary). They are required to use all of there PTO during that period but most of our employees do not have 30 days of vacation saved up. Previous companies I’ve worked for had a 2 week waiting period. What is a good average for the STD waiting period? Thanks for your assistance.
I have worked at companies that have had a 7 day wait and a 14 day.

You will probably find that the number varies. Where I am – hospital – USA it is 7 days.

Waiting periods are going to vary by industry, employee size, union
groups, who pays the premium (or is it self-funded) and claims
experience. I would recommend you determine what are the norms for your
company’s industry.
Usually the premium difference between 15 day and 30 day waiting period
is exponential (as opposed to a straight ratio) due to the shorter wait
time and the corresponding increase in claims that wouldn’t occur under
a 30 day wait. If employees pay the premium, moving to a 15 day waiting
period may price out lower paid employees from having any coverage at
all. If have a fully insured plan your broker/consultant should be able
to assist you in pricing and competitor coverage levels.
